About the event
This is a deep dive! If you have worked with this theory for a while and want a deeper understanding of yourself or your clients, these three webinars may be for you. You will understand Jung’s type model from a more organic, holistic perspective. You will explore the structure and dynamics of Jung’s type model and its foundation in depth psychology.
Series Summary
Jung’s original type model is alive and fluid. The eight types serve as energies and orientations for the process of individuation—the perpetual growth and development of individual personalities.
To better understand that growth and development, we will revisit some of his key terms. Building on Freud’s work, Jung developed a psychology that acknowledges the value of the unconscious—depth psychology. Yet, Jung went further than Freud in developing observations about what he called the “archetypes of the collective unconscious”—foundations for conscious awareness. He developed terms like “shadow” and personal unconscious” to distinguish key elements of the unconscious. We will see how these, and more familiar terms like “persona” and “ego,” relate to personal development.
For understanding Jung’s original type model, the terms “attitude” and “orientation” are important. We will review those terms as elements of the type collaborations and oppositions that advance personal development. Some of the orientations will be to the archetypal images, and others will be to life in the world.
To recognise the congruence of Jung’s model with Iain McGilchrist’s profound insights about the brain and human experience, we will devote some time to relating both the types themselves and their organic process of personal development to McGilchrist’s observations.
Session 1
Jung’s Foundational Depth Psychology
6 October: 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm UK
We will review the foundational structure of Jung’s depth psychology, born from his “confrontation with the unconscious” after his break from Freud. It is the setting in which psychological types play their role in both consciousness and the unconscious. Understanding the fundamentals of his depth psychology is essential for understanding his type model.
Session 2
Psychological Types as a Compass of Consciousness
10 November: 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm UK
We will focus on the structure of Jung’s original type model, reviewing its integral relationship with Jung’s depth psychology. We will see how five of Jung’s eight types are oriented to “the archetypes of the collective unconscious.” We will also review correlations with Iain McGilchrist’s studies of brain functions, as they relate to Jung’s model.
Session 3
The Dynamics of Jung’s Types & Depth Psychology
24 November: 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm UK
Building on the first two seminars, we will review how the types combine to create dynamic complements and oppositions, engendering individuation—the further development of unique individuality. Jung famously remarked, “I would not for anything dispense with this compass [of psychological types] on my psychological voyages of discovery.” In this series of three webinars, we will gain a clearer understanding of why Jung depended so fully on his type compass.
